masoor in coconut gravy

Wowwwwwwwww. is all I can say.

I have been in a cooking rut for some time now. Yesterday I was planning to make something with whole masoor, probably a pulao because it would be quick.

Then I came across this recipe for masoor bhaji by Shilpa.

Pressure cook:
masoor
(whole)
onions(chopped)
potato(chopped)
To grind:
coconut
cloves
piece cinnamon
coriander seeds
red chilies
tamarind extract
peppercorns

It was fantastic! Just what I needed.

I dont have any pics, but have to admit mine didnt look as lovely as her photo. We had it with methi roti, using the methi I grew myself :)

Potato Masala with a twist

3 large idaho potatoes, chopped
1/2 red onion chopped
green garlic chopped
1 yellow tomato, chopped
handful fresh avarekai
water to almost cover
salt, turmeric
pressure cook 1 whistle

release lid, mash slightly, and add tempering:
mustard seeds
curry leaves
green chili chopped
red chili broken

This was wonderful with pesarattu.

Pesarattu:
whole moong - at least a cup
handful idli rice
1t methi seed
Soak for few hours,
Grind with ginger, green chili, cumin seed. Add salt and hing.

I thought I was using green garlic, but now I realized it was actually garlic chives! Hmm.

The Pulao (pic here)

cumin seeds
mustard seeds
3 green chilies minced
1small onlion sliced thinly
ginger paste
bunch of gree... um, garlic chives chopped
2 handfuls of val lilva-mine were frozen (or beans of your choice, for protein)
big pinch of garam masala
salt

1big cup rice, sona masoori, washed

In pressure cooker put peanut oil, then add ingredients in order given(fry the onions well). Add water and pressure cook 1 whistle. Serve with cucumber raita.

Other uses:
Goes great with potatoes.
Havent tried yet, but planning on making a pesto with garlic chives, basil, olive oil, lemon juice. Should be yummy on bread or pasta.

Update: Made the pesto as above and added pecans to that, served with fettuccine noodles. Sprinkled romano/parmesan cheese on top. (pic)
